St Piers School and College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk. By protecting our students health, wellbeing and rights we enable and empower them to live and learn free from fear, harm, abuse and neglect.
We expect all parents, visitors, staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
We follow the procedures set out by the Surrey Safeguarding Children and Adult Partnerships and KSCIE 2023. Our Safeguarding and Child & Adult Protection procedure and associated safeguarding procedures are aligned with these.
In accordance with our responsibilities under Section 175/157 of the Education Act 2002 we have a Designated Safeguarding Lead.

The following are concerns that we need to know about:
- Allegations or disclosures about peers or staff
- Bullying
- Child on child abuse/assault by another adult at risk
- Medication errors
- Online safety - which may include online grooming, sexting, cyber bullying
- Poor practice
- Unexplained injuries or bruises
Reporting concerns
If you have any concerns about the safety of a student please make contact , as soon as possible, with Gill Walters.
If she is not available please call reception on 01342 832243 and state that you have a potential safeguarding concern and you will be transferred to a DSL.
If you are on campus there are posters in each area advising you who to contact and/or go to school, college or main receptions where you can ask to speak to a DSL.
If you think a child or young person may be in immediate danger, call 999. Otherwise, you can contact Surrey Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) on 0300 470 9100 (option 1 - for childrens services and option 2 - for adult services). Out of hours (after 5pm) the number is 01483 517898.
If you are worried about the safety of a child/young person and the school/college/residential provision is closed, please make use of the following numbers:

- Surrey Crisis Mental Health Helpline 0800 915 4644 (24 hours, 7 days a week) - helpline for all ages (children & adults) CAMHS
- Kooth.com is an on-line counselling service for anybody aged between 11-24 years-old and they are open to 10pm each day. Advice will be given by trained professionals in on-line chat rooms.
- Respect.uk.net is a charity helping to end domestic violence. They will work with those who are victims and help those causing the harm to others. They work alongside lots of other organisations that will help you find the right help you need.

- If you are concerned that you cannot keep someone safe due to mental health reasons, you can call 111 (NHS advice), 999 (emergency services) or take them straight to A&E.
Online Safety Away from St Piers
Children and young people are spending more time online, whether that is talking to their friends or playing online games. We want parents to have access to the necessary support, so that you can ensure that your children are safe online. The Department for Education has published the following list of recognised support groups that you can access:
- Internet matters - support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online
- London Grid for Learning - support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online
- Net-aware - support for parents and careers from the NSPCC
- Parent info - support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online
- Thinkuknow - for advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online
- Report Harmful Content - advice for parents and carers
If there any concerns whilst online, the following sites can also be accessed:
- Childline - for support
- UK Safer Internet Centre - to report and remove harmful online content
- CEOP - for advice on making a report about online abuse
Of course, students and parents can also report back to us and we will be able to offer advice as appropriate.
Operation Encompass
We are involved in Operation Encompass in partnership with Surrey Police. This means that the Lead DSL will receive a notification from Surrey Police before the start of the next school day when a child has been involved in or exposed to a domestic abuse incident, the previous day. The information is given in confidence to the Lead DSL and will enable us to provide the best possible support for the child
Prevent
The purpose of the Prevent strategy is to safeguard and support vulnerable people to stop them from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism or extremist causes. We are fully committed to this and actively promote British Values.
Early help
Early Help means providing support as soon as a problem emerges, at any point in a child's life, from the foundation years through to the teenage years. Surrey's Early Help approach is known as Family Resilience.
Families in Surrey can ask for help through the Surrey Children's Single Point of Access (C-SPA). Or you can discuss this with a professional at St Piers School and ask them to complete a request for support form. The C-SPA will decide which service can best support the family and pass the information on. For us to request support from another service, families must have agreed that they would welcome the extra help and given consent to share their information.
