At St Piers College, we believe in empowering our students with hands-on, meaningful experiences that celebrate their skills and creativity. This year, our vocational students in Multi-Skills and Textiles had the incredible opportunity to design and craft the prestigious trophies for the 2025 Natspec Awards. This project was not just about making trophies; it was a journey of learning, teamwork, and artistic expression.
Mastering the Art of Woodworking
Using a variety of handheld tools, our students honed their woodworking skills through measuring, marking, cutting, sanding, drilling, and assembling oak pieces with precision. Each step in the process deepened their understanding of craftsmanship and the importance of attention to detail. Their dedication resulted in beautifully handcrafted structures that serve as the foundation of the trophies.
Textile Innovation: Kintsugi and Sashiko Embroidery
Taking inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi and the traditional Sashiko embroidery technique, our students brought new life to unwanted fabrics. Through fabric selection, cutting, machine sewing, and hand-stitching, they created stunning textile patterns that were inlaid into the wooden trophy structures. This approach not only showcased their textile artistry but also emphasized the beauty of imperfection and resilience.
The Meaning Behind the Trophies
The final trophy design symbolizes interconnected links in a chain, representing strength, unity, and resilience—values that align perfectly with our college ethos, “Believe, Empower, Succeed as a Team.” Each trophy is unique, reflecting the creativity and skills of every student involved. The handcrafted oak links, infused with vibrant textile elements, serve as a powerful reminder of teamwork and perseverance.
A Team Effort Worth Celebrating
Our Natspec Trophy Team worked tirelessly to bring this project to life. From woodworking to fabric art, each student contributed their expertise and passion, making these awards a true representation of their collective talent. The entire process has been an enriching experience, allowing them to apply their vocational training in a meaningful, high-profile project.
Presenting the Trophies to the Natspec Awards
We are incredibly proud to present these eight one-of-a-kind trophies at the 2025 Natspec Awards.
