Autism Education Trust (AET) Training

St Piers School and College are proud to be working with AET to deliver the AET post 16 programme in West Sussex and Kent.


The Autism Education Trust helps children and young people with autism to receive an education, enabling them to reach their potential. AET are supported by the Department of Education and their post 16 programme offers training and resources to professionals working in various post 16 settings for young people who are on the autism spectrum. The AET post 16 programme will form an essential part of your Continuing Professional Development.

There are four modules available:

Making Sense of Autism - Raising Awareness

The making sense of autism training is a 90 minute session that will give you a better understanding and awareness of autism and the way it affects young people in your setting

Basic autism awareness training for everyone involved in a post 16 setting who would benefit from an understanding of autism. This includes teaching and support staff, office staff, caterers, caretakers, transport staff, governors, employers and careers advisers.

All participants will be able to;

  • Understand the four key areas of difference that need to be taken into account when working with young people on the autism spectrum.
  • Know the importance of understanding the young person on the autism spectrum and their profile of strengths and areas for development.
  • Identify the key areas to help young people on the autism spectrum build positive relationships with staff, peers and people in their community.
  • Develop an awareness of the sensory and communication differences that young people on the autism spectrum may experience.

Making Sense of Autism for Pracititioners

The good autism practice training has been designed to support all practitioners working directly with young people on the autism spectrum to develop their practice. This module is 1 day or 4 x 90 minutes.

This training offers practical approaches to developing teaching, learning and support strategies for all staff working directly with young people on the autism spectrum (including tutors, learning support practitioners, assessors, trainers and job coaches).

The training will:

  • Develop your understanding of autism and what makes good autism practice.
  • Provide you with practical strategies to support outcomes and experiences for the students with whom your work.
  • Provide you with tools to develop and evaluate your practice and that of your setting.

Transition to College

The AET post 16 transition from school to college module is for all staff in post 16 settings, schools and local authorities working to support young people with autism to move school into further education. This module is half a day or 2 x 90 minutes.

The training offers techniques for effective transition planning for young people on the autism spectrum, using person–centred approaches and tools, and how to work in partnership with young people, their families and other service providers to achieve positive outcomes after school.

The training will:

  • Identify actions to support young people on the autism spectrum to complete a successful move from school to college (transition).
  • Provide you with approaches and strategies to support transition.
  • Enhance your understanding about how to build partnerships with key stakeholders in the transition process. These include young people, their families and other service providers.
  • Enable you to improve outcomes for young people on the autism spectrum, both as they move from school into college and from college into adult life.

Making sense of Autism for Managers

AET post 16 making sense of autism for managers is for all staff who may take a leadership role that includes responsibility for developing provision for young people with autism within a post 16 setting. This module is for 1 day or 4 x 90 minutes for all staff who may take a leadership role that includes responsibility for developing provision for young people on the autism spectrum within a post 16 setting (including lead practitioners for autism; inclusion and/or curriculum managers and those who manage additional learning support).

The training will:

  • Enhance your knowledge and understanding of good autism practice.
  • Help you to question, evaluate and develop autism practice within your setting.
  • Provide you with the tools to audit staff skills and identify training needs.
  • Develop your skills and knowledge so that your organisation is able to meet and then exceed the requirements of external reviewers such as Ofsted and is compliant with legislative requirements.
